“Protest” in Kisumu June 6th 2016
Still processing my thoughts on this… but can at least document the days events that happened outside my apartment.
Protesters used piki pikis (motorbikes) and carried leaves.
On their way to demonstrate.
At around 9.30am they began lighting the road block outside, others had already been started as the sky was quickly turning grey.
It took several attempts for the tyres to start burning.
The Indians stayed in their compounds waiting to see what would unfold.
By 10.15 am and four attempts they got the fire burning.
More tyres were brought…
A group of protesters take over the roadblock.
Vehicles struggle to pass.
Rubbish bins used for noise, throwing and burning.
Others arrive.
This man is telling the other guy to add his stolen bin to the fire.
Shortly after this was taken these men started throwing large rocks at by passers.
Large branch added to the fire for burning.
The local bus stop with Kisumu burning behind, the words on this advert catch my eyes…
These guys were driving around with a bin tied to the back of their bike to create noise.
11.30am another fire is started in the middle of the crossroad.
Kisumu residents posing for pictures in front of the fires.
This man was hurling rocks.
The local glue sniffing boys getting stuck in today with the protests.
Local press riding around taking film.
Just wanted to show what happened on my corner of kisumu today.
Oh deary Hazel this is not nice. Many years ago I too lived in Nairobi. I clearly remember those green branches on cars and in peoples hands. … It’s very unsettling and disruptive to your daily life.

It’s awful, I guess the people feel so frustrated and desperation shows. Not sure if protesting really helps all that much apart from pressuring politicians. I have always been of the opinion that jittery cats makes silly jumps.
